Deadhead Miles Calculator

Empty miles burn fuel and hours but pay nothing. See what deadhead costs on a load and what it does to your real rate.

The trip

How deadhead is calculated

Deadhead cost = deadhead miles × cost per mile
Real rate = rate × loaded miles ÷ (loaded + deadhead miles)
Max deadhead = (rate × loaded miles ÷ cost per mile) − loaded miles

Most carriers try to keep deadhead under 10–15% of total miles. A short, high-paying load with long deadhead can pay less per mile than a cheaper load next door.

Common questions

What is a good deadhead percentage?

Under 10–15% of total miles is a common target. Industry-wide, empty miles often run higher.

Do brokers pay for deadhead?

Rarely, except on some dedicated or expedited freight. Factor it into your counter-offer instead.
